April 2015

Dear Praying Friends,

Oh, so much has happened here for us since our last letter went out. It is now the 5th of May as we update you on March and April. The first is: there’s a new baby in the house! Glory Ruth Helzerman was born on the 25th of March. But, I will let Christi fill you in on all the details. There were various flight coming and going for Christi, Jamie Parfitt, and me. Christi and Jamie (a lady form our home church) flew a week ahead of me into Port Moresby (POM) to get ready for the birth. I flew to POM on the 18th of March to be with them. A young single lady (Angel) from our church came the same day to Kaintiba to be with our children in Kaintiba.

There were a few adjustments to our original plan (a “home” birth with our midwife), but Glory was born at a small clinic. It was clean and great by Papua New Guinea standards. The staff were also national midwives working under a Doctor. Our midwife (Amy Reynolds) had come from the USA and was a great help in the delivery (Christi has more to say, I’m sure). The next day we were able to get passport photos of Glory (that’s another story) and began working on getting a PNG live birth Certificate. It just so happened the Registry office was closed on this week, so as to put a roadblock in getting everything in order for a Passport before flying back to the jungle. Providentially, God gave us an “inside man” to get it completed by the weekend. As I was contemplating on what to do, I sat down on a chair at this Registry office and silently prayed for a person to help me. An older woman came and asked why I had come, and I related the situation of getting this done before the next Monday. She took my application and we exchanged phone numbers. Come to find out, she worked in the Archive side and knew who had to sign it. The next day (Friday) it was in my hand, complete! God gave me an inside ”woman”. Monday (March 30), with Birth Certificate and cash in hand (another story), we went to the Embassy and applied for a US Passport. It has since arrived back to the US Embassy in POM for us to pick up later. Praise the Lord!

The children survived the 2 weeks I was away (and the 3 weeks mom was away). Reese Parfitt and Angel Rowe did a great job in keeping them inline. They had a youth meeting during that time, with over 50 young people in attendance. Titus, Samuel and Reese went on a looooong 1 day hike just to go see a big rock! Oh, the stories they had to tell when we got home. Christi, Jamie (with her 2 girls) Amy, and I all came back Tuesday March 31. It took Matt Allen to fly 2 round flights to get us all back, and even some of our food supplies. Over the next 2 flights he had out our way, the remaining supplies came. Now, all our guests have since returned back to the USA, and we have settled into our normal routine. Please continue to pray for us, as we pray for you. Continue for Christ and look for his return.

Christi’s Corner: Where do I start? Mark mentioned the highlights. I am writing a detailed account to put on my blog:
Glory Ruth Helzerman was born at 1:04am on March 25, 2015 PNG time. (+10 GMT). She weighed 3.1 kgs or 6lbs.8oz. She was 19” long. Even though Amy didn't officially deliver the baby she assisted at the birth and gave much labor help. We labored at home and then went to the hospital. We were only at the hospital for a little over 2 hours before she was born.
We praise the Lord for an uncomplicated birth and that I have healed nicely ! My support team (Amy Reynolds and Jamie Parfitt) were a great help to me during labor and recovery! Jamie”s family and Angel Rowe were also invaluable to us during this time. It was hard being separated but it showed me some good character being developed in the children.
Thanks to all who prayed for us during this time!!

For His Glory,
Mark and Christi Helzerman
Tabitha, Titus, Samuel, Hadassah,
Grace, Hope, and Serenity
